LVR Theatre News

Year 2019/2020 Theatre Season!

The L.V. Rogers theatre and dance departments will produce the award-winning musical Beauty and the Beast at the Capitol Theatre in early April, 2020 with Jen Macmillan as choreographer, Allison Girvan as musical director and Robyn Sheppard as director. This "tale as old as time" will not only enchant all those involved in the production, but also the community at large.

"An arrogant prince is cursed to live as a terrifying beast until he finds true love. Strangely, his chance comes when he captures an unwary clockmaker, whose place is then taken by his bold and beautiful daughter Belle. Helped by the Beast's similarly enchanted servants, including a clock, a teapot and a candelabra, Belle begins to see the sensitive soul behind the fearsome facade. But as time runs out, it soon becomes obvious that Belle's cocky suitor Gaston is the real beast of the piece."

Auditions will be held in late September. Rehearsals will begin in October. Students from all grades are welcome. Audition time and dates will be posted on the drama board outside the theatre and announced on LVTV this week. Come out and have an experience of a lifetime!

Welcome to this year's exciting season!

Through Your Teeth by LVR students, an original piece about truth and lies;

12 Angry Jurors by Sherman L Segel, adapted by Reginald Rose, a heated jury-room drama;

Shakespeare's Editor, a piece which combines scenes from the bard himself and Patti Humphries.

12 Angry Jurors is this year's full length production which will be performed at the Nelson Chamber of Commerce, Wednesday, February 27 - Sunday, March 3. Through Your Teeth will be toured to the local schools in the area  in early May while Shakespeare's Editor will be performed at the Good Will Shakespeare Festival in Vernon in late April.

12 Angry Jurors Synopsis:

A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. "He doesn't stand a chance," mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case—until one of the jurors begins opening the others' eyes to the facts. "This is a remarkable thing about democracy," says the foreign-born juror, "that we are notified by mail to come down to this place—and decide on the guilt or innocence of a person; of a man or woman we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing." But personal it is, with each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short and arguments grow heated. This play is a mature piece of dramatic literature, an experience we're proud to present.

Mark your calendars; you don't want to miss this year's performances. See you at the theatre!

Visit to Hume by the Junior Drama Class

The junior drama class travelled to Hume Elementary School to perform renditions of popular children's stories for an appreciative audience. Fun was had by all as they explored creativity together. Kudos to Ms. MacKay and her students for sharing their talents!

Arts Education: The New Curriculum

A strong arts education benefits all students, communities, and societies by contributing to the development of well-rounded, educated citizens. The arts connect students with history, heritage, culture, and community, fostering an understanding of the diverse values and perspectives of global, Indigenous, and Canadian societies. Arts education also stimulates students’ imaginations, innovation, creativity, and sense of well-being while developing competencies useful to their education and careers.
Encouraging a sense of wonder, curiosity, and engagement with the arts is an integral part of becoming an educated citizen. Through the arts, students’ interests and talents are fostered in a variety of ways of knowing, understanding, and doing. Students learn to co-operate, overcome challenges, find innovative approaches, appreciate differences, and negotiate with others. Such exploration allows students to be creative, gain competency with materials, and develop high-level thinking skills.
The B.C. Arts Education curriculum is designed to enable students to explore the world through an artistic lens and to express their ideas, opinions, beliefs, and emotions. The curriculum also connects strongly with the values expressed in the First Peoples Principles of Learning. Students are guided in developing artistic abilities in four core disciplines: dance, drama, music, and visual arts. While each is unique and of equal importance, the four disciplines naturally work together to enhance students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth. All students have the capability and potential to create and engage in the arts and to develop individual strengths and capacities.
The Arts Education curriculum is founded on the artistic habits of mind – explore and create, reason and reflect, communicate and document, and connect and expand. All are lifelong and transferable knowledge and skills. Students investigate artistic elements, processes, and techniques using a range of materials, tools, and environments, and they learn to honour and respect cultural protocols. Students also develop creative ways to communicate emotions, thoughts, meanings, and concepts through the arts, and they learn to respond to knowledge and perspectives that are embedded in language, movement, memory, image, symbol, and story.
Each of the four core art disciplines offers students opportunities to deepen their understanding of self, community, cultures (their own and others’), and the world. And, through exposure to all of the arts, students build a greater understanding in all areas of learning and have the chance to apply their knowledge and worldviews in different contexts. The Arts Education curriculum provides an essential way for all students to express and understand meaning, while also challenging them to engage in dynamic ways of creating, thinking, and problem solving.

The B.C. Arts Education curriculum contributes to students’ development as educated citizens through the achievement of the following goals. Students are expected to:
  • develop aesthetically through the core disciplines of dance, drama, music, and visual arts, as well as through interdisciplinary forms
  • investigate artistic elements and processes through the artistic habits of mind – explore and create, reason and reflect, communicate and document, and connect and expand – to understand connections between the arts and human experience
  • create and respond to works of art using inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to deepen their awareness of self, others, and the world
  • recognize the value of a variety of cultural perspectives and explore contemporary and historical art forms from their own identity and cultural heritage, as well as those of others
  • pursue a lifelong interest in the arts and gain the confidence to create and contribute to the local/national/global art community as an individual and/or group

Announcing This Year's Major Production - Radium Girls
by D.W. Gregory

To be performed at The Capitol Theatre in February
Auditions to be held the week of September 11, 2017

"In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation but also with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth and the commercialization of science."
