Major School Production

OTT Theatre Production Course:

For those in the OTT Theatre class, there will be a brief but important informational meeting Wednesday, November 1 at 11:45 in the theatre. See you there!

OTT Theatre Production 2017/2018

This exciting course is intended for theatre students who want to apply the practical skills learned in class to a full scale theatre production. The course includes auditions, rehearsals, design workshops, set construction, costumes, publicity and the many other aspects of creating a main stage production. This course is not meant to replace Drama 10 or Theatre Performance 11/12. It is strongly recommended that students take both courses in tandem. Students should note that this course happens outside the timetable. The reality of a theatre production is that it requires absolute commitment to long hours in concentrated blocks of time. Students are required to attend rehearsals and performances. Welcome to the season!

Admission by audition/interview only

Course Design:

Students are expected to work on the two  productions scheduled for this year's season, either behind the scenes as a crew member or on stage as an actor. As well students must attend the scheduled theatre workshops intended to hone specific theatre skills. Finally, students must work on one of the Theatre for a Changing World project initiatives.

Productions:

Each year LVR produces a major school play or musical. This year we will stage the award-winning Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory, whose plays frequently explore political issues through a personal lens. The New York Times called her "a playwright with a talent to enlighten and provoke." Students in Theatre Production 11/12 will be involved in all aspects of the production from design to execution.

In April students will travel to the much-loved annual Goodwill Shakespeare Festival in Vernon where they will perform a second production (TBA). Auditions for the Shakespeare play will be held early next semester.

Students must pay $150.00 to attend the annual Shakespearean festival which includes professional workshops and inspired performances from schools across the province.

Theatre for a Changing World:

As mentioned earlier, students must work on one of the Theatre for a Changing World initiatives. With a focus on creative collaboration, these projects include research, play-building, presentation and facilitation. This section of the course explores the role of theatre in bringing about positive social change. These are student initiated projects. Here are two possible proposals for the coming year.

  1. Project Clown: Daring to be Yourself in a Judgemental World.

This short original theatre piece will be directly linked to physical comedy and clowning, both introduced to LVR thespians by James and Jamesy, two professional performing artists from Vancouver.  Students will first explore their personal clown; then create solo clown acts and short mask vignettes which will be showcased during an evening of theatre in the spring.

       2.  Project Get it Right: Truth about Mental Illness

Working in collaboration with teenmentalhealth.org,, theatre production students will create a short theatre piece designed to dispel myths about mental illness, especially those myths that directly relate to youth. This piece involves research, discussion and creative collaboration. The goal is to perform this piece for a middle school audience some time in the spring.

Meetings/Rehearsals:

The 110 hours needed to meet course requirements will include the following:

  1. production meetings and skill building workshops (specific dates and times to come)
  2. pre-production, production and post production hours for each play/project

Assessment:

Students must keep a Theatre Production Journal; specific hours spent in pre-production meetings, in rehearsals and in performance must be logged. The journal which includes creative brainstorming and student reflection is a critical assessment tool used in this course. Students will also be assessed on crew and performance skills. Criteria will be set according to the specific project and student role. While this course is linear, students will only receive marks in this course during the second semester reporting sessions,
